Weets English Championship Fell Race

The Weets stands above Barnoldswick a few miles north of Burnley and south west from Skipton.  The Weets fell race is in early June, but this year Barlick Fell Runners organised this extra event as one of the six races that make up the English Fell Race Championships.  I entered with some trepidation – this race would attract the very best fell runners.  I was not wrong!  The women’s race was run in searing heat, with several finishers suffering its ill effects.  The winner, in a field of 70, was Victoria Wilkinson of Bingley in 43:54.  The men’s race set off 90 minutes later, and was marked by lightning, thunder and a burst of heavy rain – a huge improvement on wall to wall sunshine!  9.8km and 550m ascent later I finished 188th of 233 finishers in 57:07.  The winner was Chris Arthur of Bowland in 38:03.
