Race date: Sunday 19th October 2014
Abingdon (Oxfordshire’s premier marathon) had 637 runners this year with Strider Mark Gray amongst them.
The race was won by Chris Jordan of Leicester Coritanian AC in 2:32:35 with Sophie Carter of Belgrave Harriers taking the ladies honour in 2:50:21.
As Mark describes below in his own words, he had a bad day.
“Had a disappointing day at Abingdon… Didn’t feel quite right when I woke up, and from the start of the race my legs were like jelly and I was working too hard too early to try and keep pace. By 6-7 miles it was obvious that the game was up. I thought I’d DNF, but decided it was too far to travel for a DNF, so ended up grinding out a very lonely, tough last 19 miles getting slower and slower. Not enjoyable on the 2 lap course….. My goal was to beat 2.45 and finish top ten. In the end I was pleased to finish in 3.05. Need to work out why I struggled so much and I’m sure I’ll learn from this. Disappointing after 16 weeks hard work though.”
