The Steel City Mile

The Steel City Mile
Friday 11th September 2015 from 6.00pm to 9.00pm
Sheffield Hallam University Stadium, Woodbourn Road.

Join us at Woodbourn Road for an evening of athletics, made up of:

  • The Steel City Mile
  • Inter Venue 4x400m Challenge
  • The Sub Four Relay
  • Family Relays

steel city mileHow fast can you run a mile? Striders have the chance to test themselves over this classic distance with a series of six graded mile races which will be followed by a series of fun relay events.

Few of us ever race, in the true sense of the word, and graded races provide an equal contest allowing athletes of similar ability to race each other. This will be an unfamiliar scenario for many with tactics as well as ability coming into play.

The evening kicks off with a fun warm up led by Jennifer Rich and David Palmer with music to get you in the mood so be ready to rhumba.
This is followed by the main event, a series of graded mile races (four and a bit laps of the track) which will provide plenty of entertainment for family and competitors alike. We’ll give you your lungs back later.

We will also be looking for captains from each of the club venues, Heeley, Millhouses, Chaucer, Graves, Woodbourn Road and Hillsborough to put together teams of four to complete for the Steel City 4x400m relay challenge.

The four minute barrier was broken in 1954 and the World Records now stand at 4:12:56 for women (Svetlana Masterkova, Russia in 1996) and 3:43:13 for men (Hicham El Guerrouj, Morocco in 1999). We will therefore be looking for team captains to form two relays teams to attempt to run a four minute mile. These can have as many, or few, members as each captain sees fit. So, we could see 4x400m, 8x200m or even 16x100m but how slick will the baton changeover be?

Finally Phil Howson will be organising as series of fun 80m relays, short enough for all the family to get involved.

The bar will be open (no, it’s not free) and Andy Green will be putting on the music for us.

To enter the Steel City Mile, email Peter Brown via the contact page.

This event is open to EVERYONE.  All Striders are encouraged to enter, regardless of pace.

Judging by the turnout at the Five Mile Road League and Dam Flask Relay the event will be limited to members of Steel City Striders and their family only.
