The Hathersage Hurtle – Inaugural Race

Race Date: Sunday 21st May 2017

Report by James Rose.

Hathersage Hurtle is a new event in the calendar and the organisers have already started planning for the following year after a successful first go. It’s a sort of figure 8 just shy of 20 miles, climbing up to Shatton Moor, down to the Thornhill trail and back into Hathersage(ish) before up New Rd to Stanage, Burbage and down Padley Gorge.

The terrain is mixed but pretty straightforward; decent trails, a fair bit of road, the bit across top of Stanage is about as ‘felly’ as it gets, no mad descents. The route was well enough marked to follow without knowing (or even looking at) the route beforehand. There were three water stations staffed by very friendly marshals, so you didn’t even need to carry anything really (no FRA regs either). And the sun was shining.

All in all, a fabulous morning out, so hopefully more striders will do it next year (I think it was sold out this year, but not until just before). The race was won by Kate Hastings (unattached) and James Rose. 233 people finished, including 13 striders.
