Race Date : 20 July 2017
Race report: Michael Squires
Having rained almost all day, the skies cleared and the evening sun shone on the 153 participants in this year’s Sheldon Fell Race. Something of an upside-down fell race, this one, starting high in the village before plunging down steep fields to the banks of the Wye. Three runners were seen to go down together in a proper tangle after hitting a hidden dip during this fast descent reminiscent of a scene from the Grand National – thankfully no harm was done save the loss of a race number.
I’m sure Jennifer won’t mind me saying that this descent was not in her comfort zone, Paul having perhaps understated the nature of this run! (Was it a fell race or a trail race – discuss?) The ascent to leave Great Shacklow Wood via a dried river bed is even steeper – too steep to run in fact, but at least dry this year.
The race was won by Alasdair Campbell from Buxton in a time of 23:49. 1st lady home was Judith Jepson from Dark Peak in a time of 29:47.

Congratulations to Caroline Brock for being second lady home despite achieving the very same the day before at Bamford! Paul Stuart (having been 1st V50 at Bamford) was second V50 home, but sadly this did not apparently earn him a prize:
