Race date: Thursday 7th June 2018
The City of Manchester 5k Series is a new race series in June, held on a flat 3-lap course in Alexander Park. Races take place each Thursday in June. The course is on flat wide paths with 6 feet elevation per lap, so perfect for a PB.
The race started at 7.30pm. One problem: I found myself at the front looking for some competition. As the race got under way I sat behind the early leader for the first long straight. Unfortunately he dropped off, leaving me on my own to attack the next 2 miles. I had to push on as I hadn’t travelled all the way to Manchester to run something slow. With the first mile and the first lap at 5.19, I was hoping to run something quicker. I pushed on again and didn’t look behind me – leading the race felt strange but I was fading and the leader came past me at the beginning of the third lap. Now hanging on to second was the focus.
The big long finish came into view so it was a kick to the line and I crossed in 16.59. Just under 17 minutes and second place meant staying for the prize giving. Picking up £25 was a nice surprise.
Safe to say I will be returning hopefully with some quick boys on the course.
The first finisher was Scott Matthews from East Cheshire harriers in 16.30. The first woman over the line was Helen Armitage from Sale harriers in 19.59.
