Moss Valley Madness Results & Report

Race Date: 16th September 2018

Now into its 6th year the Moss Valley Madness is a 10K trail race organised by Crystal Peak Runners as a charity fundraiser with this year’s charity being Sheffield Children’s Hospital. With gusting winds and drizzle it promised to be a challenging race and served as warning that summer may finally be over.

Starting out from the playing fields at Eckington school it’s not long before the first of several climbs is encountered as runners take to the open fields before heading into the woods. Scenic, undulating and with tricky descents thrown in; for someone who has allergic to anything not on tarmac what started out as a tricky day in the office soon became a survival mission. Matters were not helped by the final climb that goes on for over a mile coming just at the wrong point at about 7 Km in . Mental murder of several innocent marshals may have been committed after several cheerful shouts of “you’re almost at the top”. Embarrassingly I have to admit to the climb besting me and was reduced to walking having blown up like a boiler with suspect riveting. After some stern words to myself at the crest of the hill I managed to get my legs moving again for the final K back to the school and somehow managed a semblance of a kick at the end on the uphill finish (oh the sadists!).

There was a lovely moment at the finish with the Striders in attendance offered up a beautiful rendition of Happy Birthday for Matt Surgeon as he crossed the line celebrating his 60th, ahem 50th, birthday.

All in all, a tough and challenging race but very well organised with great marshalling throughout an amazing selection of cake on offer for afterwards plus socks in the goodie bag. All in the name of a good cause, certainly one I’d recommend and a bargain at £9 entry.

First to finish on the day was Luke Beresford in 39:34 with first lady our very own Sarah Allcard continuing her good run of form finishing in 50:39. In addition there was a new category trialled on the day with first dog home Rigby (currently unattached), who survived a stewards inquiry for a racing incident on the home straight to finish in 55:47.
