Bamford Sheep Dog Trials fell race 2019

Race date: Monday 27 May 2019

This really is a race of three halves: first up, a speedy 1.5 miles from the Bamford recreation ground along the road and then a fairly flat wooded track towards Ladybower. Secondly, a brute of a climb to the top of Win Hill. And thirdly, the long fast descent across fields and back through the woods to the finish. At just 4.5 miles in total, there are no hiding places, especially on the ascent: you’ve already been running pretty fast for a while when you’re directed left and immediately into a hands-on-knees slog. The run down is steep enough and technical enough to require you to stay focused on both your footing and the route; several runners took a wrong turn coming back to the main track and lost a chunk of time.

This year’s race was the fourth counter in the 2019 Fell Race Championship.

The race was won by Harry Holmes (Matlock AC) in 31:18. First lady was Sally Fawcett (Dark Peak) in 40:13. There were 199 finishers*. Notable mention to Andy Buck as first MV60. Women’s only race placings in brackets.

*Hal Roberts was missing from the official results, so we have added him in without amending the official finishing positions. Therefore, unofficially, a satisfyingly round 200 runners finished the race.
