Race Date : Sunday 13 October 2019
The occasional clatter of spikes on concrete, chatter about 12mm or 15mm and the smell of deep heat can only mean one thing – it’s cross country season. The South Yorkshire League consists of 4 races, the 1st of which was hosted by Steel City Striders at Norfolk Heritage Park. Whilst the persistent rain made for perfect cross country conditions it may not have been the best conditions for marshalling, so a special mention must go to the team of Strider volunteers who spent several hours outside in the pouring rain to ensure the day went off without a hitch.
As is traditional at cross country races the day started with the junior age races (Under 13s, Under 15s etc…). The 1st Striders in action were in the Senior Women’s Race, running 5.7k the race was won by Nicola Devine from Rotherham in a time of 22:07. Striders results –
Next up was the senior men, as the final race of the day the course had been cut up by the previous races and the resultant muddy patches may have caused some runners to regret their footwear choices as they took an unplanned slide. Running over 8.05k the race was won by Lee Milburn from Rotherham in a time of 26:15. Striders results –
