With races at Tigger Tor, Wolf’s Pit and Totley Moor completed, we are now a quarter of the way through the 2023 fell race championships. The early leaders have emerged and we’ve got an idea of where the main battles might take place. And with the summer nights finally heating up, the short evening fell races will start coming thick and fast, so there is still plenty of time to get involved and pick up some points. Next races: Grindleford on Thu 15 June, Hope Wakes on Wed 28 June and Hathersage Gala on Mon 3 July. The full list is on the fell race championships page.
Standings
Senior Women
Anne-Marie Mulvey leads with 127 points, being the only runner to complete more than one race. But strong showings from Abbie Pearse (95 points), Sarah Thorne (88 points) and Sian Evans (87 points) in their one outing so far, show this title could be very hotly contested in 2023.
Vet 40 Women
Only two runners so far in this category. Jessica Brooks (80 points) leads Rachel Rea (56) after they both opened their season at Totley Moor.
V50 Women
No competitors in this category so far this year.
V60 Women
Jo Gleig leads the way all on her own on 58 points so far, but will anyone else take up the challenge?
Senior Men
Seth Kirby (82 points) and Jim Rangeley (69 points) both opened their accounts at Totley Moor. Still plenty of time for others to catch them.
V40 Men
Already we have 9 competitors picking up points in this category. Early leaders, with 2 races completed each, are Paul Middlemas (175 points) and Louis Wood (159 points). However, strong initial races from the likes of Nigel Barnes, Dan Abbot and Jim Danson show this could be a tough competition this year.
V50 Men
Another busy category. Nobody has yet done more than one race, but Neil Schofield (78 points) takes an early lead over Nick Burns and Paul Stuart (both 67 points). You sense once they start racing head to head we’ll get a better sense of who might emerge victorious.
V60 Men
Kevin Haighton has already stolen a march on his rivals with 104 points from the two races he’s done. Can anyone hunt him down this year?
