Race Report by: Hannah Wright
Bit of an emotional race report for Bridlington. A few months ago my mums partner passed away. Part of the grieving process for my mum was to make a bucket list. On my mum’s list was to go to Bridlington around New Year as it holds many happy family memories. One of the races on my running bucket list was the Bridlington New Year race.
It was an early and foggy start for my mum Debbie and myself to get to Bridlington. Luckily the race didn’t start till 11am, but it was still a 2 hour drive.
Race HQ was at the Ship In near Sewerby hall and gardens and there was plenty of parking at the pub. On the same day there was a 5km and 10km race also. All runners received a band when they register, this was for the bacon sarnie at the end. My mums isn’t a runner, but had planned a 6 mile walk around the coast line.
The half marathon comprised of 2 laps of the out and back route. The course started on the cliffs at Sewerby and runs along the front at Bridlington. The course is great underfoot and runs along the prom so you get to enjoy the lovely sea air as you trot through the centre of Bridlington. You then turn around and head back the way you came to Sewerby. Then repeat again for the second lap.
Running past the pubs, fish and chip shops, ice cream, doughnuts and sweets was torture. It took a lot of will power not to stop for a portion of chips.
At the finish line my mum was waiting with mince pie in hand. I think she had been well looked after by the It’s Grim up North ladies at the finish line. We then headed to the pub for a pint, bacon sarnie and had time to reminisce about past trips to the East Coast.
The half marathon was won by Lee Harrison of Fordy Runs Running Club in 01:29:20. The first female finisher was Katherine Knight of Mansfield Harriers in 01:53:32.
