Old Monks (Stuart Pailor Memorial) Multi-terrain (10km) Race – 11th February

Race report by Stuart Jones

Hart Village, Sunday 11th February

10km of the muddiest, wettest, most testing trail race

Bit of a bonus, this race, as I’d entered it a year ago but the event was cancelled due to exceptional weather conditions. I’d forgotten all about it, and when the pre-race information came through a couple of weeks ago it was like a free race!

I’ve raced muddier – one or two cross country races – but this was exceptionally wet at the road start, across the fields, down into the dene, along some field edge paths (which were underwater in places) and over some tracks.

Two laps of this joy, which gave the chance to stop and snap a picture of the marshal in the pool of standing water.

The event was eco-conscious; You took your own mug for a brew afterwards. There were no medals or t-shirts at all. The cake was by donation. You washed your shoes in the torrent running down the lane beside the village hall before entering.

It was the first (and likely only) time I’ve run in longs this winter. I peeled them off before getting in the car after the race – it guaranteed my ride home.

Solo Strider: Stuart Jones, 52nd place in 55:30, and on page 1 of the results.

First male: James Anderson (not Jimmy Anderson, the cricket legend) of North Shields Poly in 36:34.

First female: Jane Spink of Sedgefield Harriers in 45:45.

There were 126 finishers – out of a sell-out 250 entries. Tells us a lot about the weather on the day and what happens when entries get carried over, perhaps.
