A Recipe for Success: Dewsbury 10k 2025

Race Date: Sunday 02 February 2025

Ingredients:

  • A fast out and back course which climbs by about 42 metres (140ft) to the turn. Note: This should not be steeper, simply enough to give a gentle nudge all the way home so that with those in good condition and approaching the race correctly should run a solid negative split.
  • A quality field with the leaders running 30 minutes and over a hundred under 35 minutes.
  • Fine weather, especially for early February, with sunshine and only a slight breeze,
  • Sixty three Steel City, stirred vigorously, so that there is always a green and gold vest to chase.
  • Plenty of quality and consistent work in training.

The result on this occasion was nineteen personal bests, two new club records (Caroline Brock F40 38:06 and Natalie Nevile F50 38:48) together with a couple of age category wins so a grand day out for many. In these circumstances it’s tempting to cry short course as happened here a few years ago but a poll of Strava easily disproves such heresy.

At the sharp end Matt Spoor, off to the Seville Marathon in three weeks, tracks a relaxed looking Rob Byers early in the race eventually going on to be the first Steel City home with fast improving Annie Chambers (66 sec pb) the club’s leading lady. (Mick Hall).

So popular has this event become with Steel City that demand made it economical to run a bus (£11 per head). Departing from Hillsborough at 07:15 it rolled up at Dewsbury in good time, parking about 400m from the start and providing the perfect bag drop. There was rumour that it was going to stop at the York Parkrun on the way until someone realised that the bus would have to leave on Saturday morning. A different experience however for those using the Matalan car park and took too long over their post race chat about the toned down T-shirt and/or cool down and ended up with with a twenty minute queue to get out. Note: next time park somewhere else, nearer the exit or get a shift on after the race.

All aboard The Magic Bus taking advantage of Richard Pegg’s skills as a travel agent. (M Baggaley).

There is a slight disparity with the Gun Position in some cases as the results have been re-sorted on Chip Time. Rebecca Pierce wins first prize for taking 3 minutes 24 seconds to cross the start line after the gun went.

Always a green and gold vest to chase. Andy Hinchliffe wearing the sunglasses chases down Adam McCauley and goes on to catch and beat him by just over ten seconds. (Mick Hall)
