Abersoch 10km – Race Report by Jo Gleig

Abersoch 10k

31 May 2025

The Lleyn peninsula is a lovely coastal area of North Wales. Abersoch is not the nicest bit, being a bit full of Mancunians who like to circle the bay on jet skis, so we always stay in a quieter part,  but I thought I’d do the 10k (which is part of their  ‘ Triple Crown’ including a Triathlon and a 20k trail race this year), while also visiting my sister in the nearby market town of Pwllheli.

It’s mainly a road race, on closed country lanes, and includes a rough track up a hill that they call the Tocyn Brutal, which really isn’t that bad compared to most Sheffield races. The last 1k however is a bit of a challenge, as it is along the beach, at high tide, with about 20 wooden groynes to ‘jump’ over, so  this was a bit of a slow final kilometre!

It was a decent sized race with about 1200 entrants, with a bit of a holiday vibe rather than mainly club runners, and they didn’t even provide a basic bag drop (probably thought everyone could leave their gear in their nearby beach chalets!)

But they had a lot of cash prizes, did a nice spraying champagne podium thing for the six main winners, and  gave me £30 cash plus free entry to next year for winning my age category (ok there were only two of us, but I did beat all of the next age category down as well, so felt a bit more deserving!)

So I guess Ill have to sign up for next year too. Maybe see a Strider or two next time!
