Braithwell Boxing Day Turkey Trot (KMR series race 12) – Run Report by Martin Downham

Braithwell (Boxing Day) Turkey Trot Race – 26th December 2024

For anyone who ran this race last year or The Butcher’s Dog Leg Race earlier this year, today’s running was very different. For starters on today’s outing the trail sections were generally slippery and to add some confusion, the race was run in the reverse direction.  It was therefore a relief that I opted for trail shoes (in part because the registration point had also changed) – so I was ready for more surprises.

KEY RACE DAY INFORMATION.

Braithwell .is a village and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England. It is about 1 mile (1.6 km) north from Maltby and 3 miles (5 km) south-east from Conisbrough. In the last census it had a population of 1060.

The impressive Church of St James in the village is a Grade II listed building.

The race starts on an uneven but quiet single track road for about 1km. It then heads over grassed paths to a footpath along side a fairly quiet road. There are some large/avoidable puddles on a farm track back. The final section is the return along a mud/grass field before turning left on to the uneven gently rising road to the start/finish point. There are no steep hills, which is a pleasant change.

Strava has the total ascent at a comfortable 58m (over 6.4km). The 11am start (on Boxing Day) is also very agreeable!

This race was the final race in the 2024, 12 race KMR (Kimberworth/Maltby/Rotherham) series but, like all the others, it can be run as a one-off.

The entry costs will typically be the same (£5/£7)

Entry for this race is on-the-day only. Other races often allow on the day/evening entries, though more are now online only and some sell out (online) in advance!

Distances are typically a little over 4 miles.

Hot food or a buffet (but not on Boxing Day) are usually provided after the race at a local pub/clubhouse

These mixed terrain events will suit all standards; including beginners

Runners typically number ~80 up to 200+

The race rules (and age categories) are fairly straight forward. The series rules are a bit more complicated, but 8 races need to be completed to be in with a chance of winning (with full details online).

Advance race specific information isn’t always easy to find online (so check Facebook and ask around if unsure)

Well done to all the runners and the Steel City Striders that completed this post Christmas Day Boxing Day event.

Thanks as always go to the race and series organisers and volunteers (who make this fun series possible):

Kimberworth Striders RC

Maltby Running Club

Rotherham Harriers & AC

On the day category prizes were awarded at The Club House (new venue), followed by the Series presentations.

Sadly there isn’t a prize for completing all 12 KMR races (yet!!!)
