Dave Crompton Memorial 7 mile race walk result and report by Tony Bell

Race Date: Saturday 10th May 2025

Lancashire Walking Club has some memorial events in its annual calendar. Most of these are for old walkers who died many years ago. However, we have one memorial event for a walker who died a few years ago who was younger than me.

After “thank you marshal” at Millhouses parkrun, off on the train to Chorley in Lancashire. All the trains were on time and I got to the race venue 40 minutes before the start.

It was a warm sunny day, I did 900m easy to warm up. 10 walkers lined up for our 7 mile country lanes walk. Immediately Nigel took the lead and I followed him, he had easily won the last 2 club races but I did beat him over 10km in February. The plan for today was stick with Nigel for as long as possible, it was very hard work in the first mile but the pace settled down after that. Lots of hills on this course, quite tough even for a Sheffield resident. We normally do a mile out before some laps on this course. However to make 7 miles we did an out and back course.

Turn at 38.25, very glad of a drink of water, working hard to stay in contact. As we headed back we could see we were well clear of the rest. By 5 miles I was working very hard to hang on, my left calf was complaining as we went down a steep hill. Photo shows me (long socks) at 6 miles. I defeated Nigel over 10km 3 months earlier but at 10km the cord broke and Nigel zoomed away. Rather slow in for me at the end. Very tired and a bit warm on finishing, pleased to have hung on for so long.  2nd place in 77.31.

We waited for everyone to finish then 400m very slow back to race venue for post-race food and drink. Dave’s widow and father were out on the course helping during the race, they also helped with the post-race tea.
