Gods Own Backyard Ultra – results report

15th November 2025

This is a Yorkshire version of the Backyard Ultra dreamed by by Gary Cantrell who also is responsible for the Barkley marathon. There are Backyard Ultras internationally now and a World Championship

You have to run 4.167 miles (a yard) every hour, on the hour and when you don’t turn up on time to start the next yard you are disqualified. The race continues until only one person is left and they are the only finisher, the last person to drop out is credited with an assist, the rest get a DNF. Given the stubborn nature of ultra runners the world record for number of yards is 119 for men, Phil Gore and 95 for women, Sarah Perry, that is a staggering 495.8 miles for men and 395.8 miles for women.

This version takes place near Hawksworth, Leeds and includes canal towpath, trails and some tarmac path with some elevation.

There was one Strider present, Robert Hoffmann who completed 12 yards 50.01 miles.
