SYCAA 5 Miles – Worsborough Mill on 30th April

Round Three of the South Yorkshire 5 mile series took the runners to Worsborough Mill near Barnsley.  It is an undulating course similar to all the other 5 mile events but it does have an enjoyable 1.5 mile downhill section to the finish.

Following the chilly winds at Lodge Moor the weather had changed yet again to decidedly hot.  What will we get for the last fixture at Ingbirchworth – a plague of locusts maybe, marauding deer? (South Yorkshire league events have been cancelled in the past for that very reason).

Numbers were again slightly down on the first fixture at Elsecar, possibly because a number of people had completed a marathon in Manchester, London or Blackpool just three days previously.  A few hardy souls showed great determination by turning out anyway on what must have been seriously heavy legs.

46 Striders took to the start line, with M45 John Kilcoyne leading the club home in 25th place overall.  Not far behind, and winning the women’s race, was Annie Chambers in a fine 31 minutes and 25 seconds.  Other women to place in their categories were Naomi Tuckett (2nd F35), Emily Green (3rd senior), Gillian Allen (3rd F35), Claire Wren (3rd F40), Kate Scott (3rd F60) and Caroline Greenough (2nd F55). The only man to place was Jed Turner who won the M60 category – the third different winner in that category so far which will make the last race at Ingbirchworth quite interesting.

The first man to finish was Mark Jones from Sheffield Running Club in a very impressive 26 minutes and 22 seconds.  Mark is a Latin scholar by all accounts, so maybe that is the secret to his super-fast times.

All to play for in the last race at Ingbirchworth on May 14th with a good few Striders still in contention for a podium place.
