Race Date: Sunday 1st March 2026
Promoted by national company RunThrough after previously being organised by local outfit Tape2Tape, run on closed roads around the flatlands of Lincolnshire both races have negligible amounts of climb although you’re always dicing with the weather at this time of year. With it raining on the hour long drive from Sheffield to Scunthorpe we were all grateful when the sun came out.
The half marathon is part of the club’s Road Race Championships with 38 Steel City crossing the start line most of which will have witnessed events as competitors in the 10k approached the final stages of their race which started at 09:00. The finish of both races is on the Quibell Park athletics track some 1500m from the start. With the half marathon starting at 09:40, over 1700 competitors were led along the course to the start point just as the leaders of the 10k were approaching. This was a change from 2025 where half marathon competitors exited the track via a side entrance into a housing estate and were mustered on a side road before their race began thus keeping the 10k route clear. Evidently the change of plan was due to flooding. With the lead bike in the 10k stopping at 9k, in the melee which ensued competitors had to battle through competitors and spectators heading for the start. The absence of marshals directing both sets of competitors was commented on by many as we chatted after the race. In the track area, where the path narrows considerably,10k runners were forced onto the grass where it is reported that one of the leaders took a tumble suffering a nasty ankle injury. We hope that he makes a full and swift recovery. Together with the still lengthy loo queues as experienced last year, there were a couple of further mishaps however. Instructions were to “Warm up in the event village 20 minutes before the race” after which “we will walk runners to the start line and line up in pace order ready to run”. Unfortunately there was no apparent attempt to sort competitors by finishing times with the result that some faster athletes were baulked by slower athletes lined up too close to the start. Additionally, there were reports of problems with the chip timing at the end of the race although these, more or less, seem to have been sorted now.
This is all a shame as the half marathon itself is intrinsically a decent race with potential for fast times although many were discouraged by the £34 plus £1.50 entry fee which didn’t even include a t-shirt. We shall see if this event gets a race licence next year.

Half Marathon
From the start, this race heads due south in an almost straight line for 6km into a stiff breeze. With some already broken and demoralised with the heart rate approaching the red, there was now an equally unpleasant side wind for another 5km which whipped across the open landscape although an unwelcome “out and back” section at 11k had been removed by changing the start position of the race. There must have been a point in the race where there was a following wind but if there was it didn’t seem to last for long. Now picking up the km markers for the 10k race, at 18km there’s an unpleasant climb over the M181 which seemed steeper than it really was after all the relentless pounding on the flat roads but enough to sort out those who were struggling from those able to push on.

Despite the unhelpful conditions there are several reports of personal bests including Richard Carter-Pearson, Ed Shattock, Ellen Broad and Hannah Murton. Alas, for others there were dnf’s and personal worsts.

The vagaries of chip timing. Alex Ball (4162) beats Louis Wood by two seconds but Louis’ chip time is one second quicker than Alex’s, so who is the winner? (RunThrough)
