Race report from Lucy Broom
This popular race, organised by Danum Harriers, takes place three times a year and usually sells out. Five 1000m loops of Doncaster Cycle Track and chip timed (impressive for approx 200 runners), it is great value for nine quid.
I wanted to race some 5k’s this year, but Donfaster sold out within 24 hours of opening and I missed out. I asked about waiting lists and had a reply explaining that all transfers are done via Facebook, which precluded me as an FB avoider. I was very touched when, a few weeks later, one of the organisers got in touch to say that they had a place for me, if I was still interested. Amazing!
The race is well organised. Adjacent, free parking; indoor space with cafe, toilets and lockers; two waves for over and under 21 minutes (7pm and 7.30pm). Bag of haribos and bottle of water on finishing.
In summary, I was neither thrilled nor displeased with my race. I had hoped to be a little quicker but knew I couldn’t expect much without specific 5k training. It was also rather wet and blustery by the time my wave started, and I went out a little quick (used to racing 800m this year!). The race also doubled as the Yorkshire Vets 5k champs, and I got a silver medal for 2nd FV50, which was nice. Annoyingly, I missed out on gold by one second! Such is the beauty of racing that chasing down the first FV50 the whole way, meant I had a better race than without her.
Altogether, a fantastic, fast 5k race which supports a local running club.
