The Windmill 6 2026 Race Report and Results

Race Date: Sunday 15th March 2026
Race Report by: Martin Downham

The Windmill 6 is described (by the organiser) as an undulating 6 mile road race around the Windmills of Spicer Hill. The route makes an anti-clockwise loop around the windmills, taking in the breath taking views across Huddersfield, Wakefield, Penistone and surrounding areas (and passing a famous viewing fort on the way).

The possible reason why there are so many windmills up here is because it can be windy and today (race day) the wind was fierce, driving in cold showers of rain, from all angles. In weather like this, it took some effort to leave the car and make the c. 800m walk (up the lane from race HQ) to the start.

Race HQ is located at: Birdsedge Village Hall, HD8 8XT (on the main road). Numbers were available for collection from 10am (for the leisurely 11am start – up the lane!!!). Welcome (FREE) hot drinks, baked potatoes and hot-dogs were also available at the after race buffet. There are warm toilets too.

The Windmill 6 is the first in a 3 race series;

Race two is the Colne Valley 10K Challenge on 17 May 2026. This starts and finishes at Leymoor Cricket Club. The route climbs through Longwood and Outlane Golf Course and rewards runners with striking views over Huddersfield as they take on the challenging terrain.

The Shepley 10K brings the 3 race series to a close on 20 September 2026. Hosted by Shepley Cricket Club, the route follows a hilly anti clockwise loop on scenic country lanes, beginning and ending with fast sections and featuring a tough middle climb. A family day and children’s fun run will follow the main event.

Series awards are made as follows:
Men’s 1st, 2nd & 3rd, 1st V40, V45, V50, V55, V60, V65, V70
Women’s 1st, 2nd & 3rd, 1st V40, V45, V50, V55, V60, V65, V70

A single race entry is £14/£16 in advance and £18 on the day. Discounts are available for series entries.

The race used chip timing.

After years of memorable races and significant fundraising for local clubs and charities, the organisers have confirmed that the 2026 series will be the final edition of the Huddersfield Road Series. Those who complete all three races in the farewell series will receive a special commemorative prize.

The course is run on fairly quiet open roads. Most are single track and some have pot holes. Possibly due to recent rain, the road was flooded near mile 1. If trying to use the verge to keep the feet dry, note that there is a large “man eating” ditch by the road side (pictured). It hurts if you fall in!

Thanks go the organisers of The Huddersfield Road Series.

The race was won by Kian Ball of Denby Dale AC in 36:22. The first female finisher was Bridgette Coomber, also of Deny Dale AC in 41:35.
