So a 5 word summary

Up down up down fab.

A longer version.

Probably one of the best race names and probably one of the best local races.

The race takes place on the first weekend in March which clashes with my birthday so this was my first time running it, but my priorities have now changed and the birthday celebrations can go on hold in future years.

The race is well organised by Bradda Dads, a Bradwell dad’s community group and has the feel of a good old fashioned community event, free parking at EPB books, a beautifully hand drawn map showing you how to get to the start field, which has a marque to collect numbers from and drop bags off as well as helping yourself to free tea and coffee. The local farmer, whose land the race starts and finishes on, stands on the back of his tractor to start the race.

Then it’s a short dash down the field and through a small ford (some nesh runners use the bridge, how dare they ☹) then the pain starts with almost a mile of up and 700 ft of elevation gain (remembering no pain no gain is important).

At the top you are rewarded with lovely undulating moorland followed by the first gain, a fabulous short, steep technical decent with a bit more pain to take you back almost to the top of the hill that you huffed and puffed up earlier, it’s at this point it’s all gain and the pain is a dim distant memory as you embrace your inner idiot and fly down 600 ft of grassy field back to the ford and a short sharp hill to the finish.

For me three quarters of this race was spent with two other runners; one who was good at climbing; one who was fast on the flat and we were regularly passing each with words of encouragement culminating with hand shakes and hugs as we had all helped each other achieve results we would not have had made without each other, For me this what makes fell running such a great sport, no splits, no pacing, no PB’s, just running in its purest form.

So why not give it a go, you never know you might like it.
