Hundall Hobble

Sunday 3rd October 2021

Report by Jennie Stevens

‘The Hundall Hobble is a 5 mile trail race through the beautiful Derbyshire countryside. The route gives you the chance to take in some breath-taking views as well as a couple of breath-taking climbs!’.  This year’s race took place on Sunday 3rd October.

I can highly recommend this race as an alternative to having a Sunday lie in.  It’s a small and friendly local race which starts at the village cricket ground.  It’s a new race, only in its second year, the first one having taken place in July 2019 but didn’t happen last year due to Covid, then was delayed, etc etc yawn yawn.  I would expect the 2022 event to be in July again, with a few other events (BBQ, alcoholic drinks and games) going on.  This year there was a DJ and a tombola, hot drinks and cake.
Hundall is just west of Dronfield, so unsurprisingly there were a decent number of DRC runners, and a ‘spattering’ of Striders, with various other clubs making up the 69 runners.  The race set off around the cricket field, then out onto country paths, through and along fields and woods, with a bit of an unwelcome uphill road section at the end.  It’s well marshalled with no chance of taking a wrong turn (or so I’d thought – it turned out a few people did go wrong).
There were a few falls due to people tripping on tree roots not visible due to the low October sun – obviously wouldn’t be a problem in July.
I thought it was a lovely race with a pleasant route – very friendly, only 700ft elevation, just a nice Sunday outing.  I’m sure we can equal the DRC numbers next year.
The race was won by Chris Bevan, setting a new course record in 32.32.  First lady was Collette Gains, in 40.15.
Clubs aren’t listed on the results, but attending Striders (as far as I know) were:  Mark Platton, Bob Grocutt,  Sarah Allcard, Paul Shelton, Kev Hewitt, Paul Stewart and me.
I was lucky enough to win the FV40 prize of a bottle of Merlot…the benefits of entering a small race!
