Environmental Guidance

At Steel City Striders we want to play our part in tackling the growing concern about the climate crisis and species extinction, as well as our more general impact on the environment. We hope all members will contribute to this.

Travel

Please try to walk, run or cycle to training sessions, races and other events, or use public transport.

If you travel by car please try to car share. You can join our Facebook car sharing group to organise this: https://www.facebook.com/groups/398259587452055/

The club will provide transport to events like the cross-country championships, or will arrange car sharing.

If you travel to races outside the UK, please consider how to reduce your carbon footprint or alternatively offset your carbon use. An internet search will offer several ways to do so.

Running kit

Please try to recycle used running shoes and clothing. Again, an internet search will offer several ways to do so.

You can recycle used running shoes at some local running kit shops.

Plastic

We are endeavouring to make all the events we organise plastic free – no plastic bottled water at the Percy Pud, for example – or if plastic has to be used, to make this recycled and/or recyclable.

We are encouraging other event organisers to do the same.

Leave no trace

We are pretty sure Striders would never do this – but just in case, please never discard used gel sachets, or such like, when out training or racing.

Please consider supporting Runners Against Rubbish: https://www.runnersagainstrubbish.org/

Freebies

We are encouraging event organisers to reconsider offering medals, t-shirts and so on to runners, or at the very least offer an “opt-out” choice when entering.

Supporting local organisations

We’ll continue to support local organisations that work to protect and improve the environment. You can do the same.  Some of the organisations are:

Eastern Moors Partnership: https://www.visit-eastern-moors.org.uk

Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust: https://www.wildsheffield.com

Green Estate: https://greenestate.org.uk

National Trust: https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/kinder-edale-and-the-dark-peak
