Horses For Courses: SYCAA XC Race 2 Longley Park

Race Date: Sunday 26th October 2025

Hosted by Valley Hill Runners, the second race in the four match series sponsored by Up & Running saw South Yorkshire’s cross country afficionados converge on Longley Park, Sheffield. Talk after the event seemed to focus on the first hill which greeted competitors almost immediately from the start. Made more difficult by the camber and tussocky long grass, perhaps more suited to the fell runner type, it was described as “brutal”, “nasty” or simply “that hill”. It seems odd that so many seemed to enjoy the day describing this as a great course. Others came away less enamoured with the place.

Sarah Thorne leading Caroline Brock halfway up the first hill. It was nip and tuck all the way with Caroline prevailing on this occasion by a few seconds.

Thirty Steel City turned out for this event compared to thirty four at Clifton a couple of weeks ago with the half marathon at Worksop always a big draw. Next event is on the open prairie of Penistone Showground on Sunday 16th November. Hills of course but not quite as brutal as Longley. Link Final Results: South Yorkshire Cross County League Match 2

Sarah-Jane Brown driving hard in an attempt to best training colleague Helen Roberts. At the finish line, a single second seems a light year away.

Some excellent photographs this week courtesy of Rob Byers although we would prefer that he was fit enough to put his spikes on and race.
