Race Date: Sunday 2nd November 2025
Having grown up in the area Gareth Winter returned home for a visit (his mother still lives in the Lake District) and rather nonchalantly reports how he was surprised to win the Lancaster Half Marathon with a pb citing the Thursday track sessions at Woodburn Road as a contributory factor to his success. Starting and finishing on the track at the headquarters of Lancaster & Morecombe AC, the course crosses the river to follow an out and back route on a cycle path on a disused railway so pretty flat all the way.

Cagey start for the first 5k with no-one prepared to take it on.
The first few kilometres were a bit cat and mouse as no one really wanted to go off on their own (very much including Gareth) but after around 5k it was down to just two as they shared turns on taking the lead. At 12k Gareth decided to push on having to cope with the headwind all by himself on the return. Having more people to hang on to might have been preferable but such is the nature of a relatively small, local race with a field of only 354. (Editor: He may have run quicker with someone to chase but perhaps refreshing instead of the hype and chaos that big city centre events can bring with them.)

Finish on the track over a minute ahead of the rest of the field. This was Gareth’s first run out in his “new” Steel City vest picked up on the black market.
First woman was Louise Goddard (Lancaster) 01:35: 37. Provisional results are on Facebook and will be updated once on Power of 10. Lancaster Half Marathon 2025 Provisional Results The scarcity of club runners in the field is quite noticeable.

Podium finish with trophy to mark his personal best. Gareth’s “new” Steel City vest has gone to a good home as he is too polite to suggest that this is probably the fastest it has ever run a half marathon.
