2nd November 2025
The North East town of Seaham once again hosted the 10k Tommy Run 10k on Sunday 2nd November, a race organised by Wild Deer Events. This always takes place on the Sunday morning of the week before Remembrance Sunday.
Last year three Striders participated (Caroline & Peter Brash alongside John Liddle). This year Jacqui Herring joined the trio alongside 912 runners in total to run along the coastal roads and paths.
Numbers were collected beforehand (very well organised) and despite the sun doing its best to warm everyone up, the car was the preferred option for many to try and maintain any sense of feeling in toes and fingers ! As the clock ticked towards 9:30am, everyone migrated to the starting area and as before, the runners observed 1 minute’s silence prior to the start before setting off alongside the Tommy War Memorial statue of a First World War soldier.
The route initially turns north, running on the main road out of the town for a mile or so, undulating at times until a cone placed in the road signalled a 180 degree turn to run back a short way before descending onto the coastal path. There must have been a storm the previous night as the path had substantial large stones on it which made for essential careful foot placement. I had forgotten but at the end of the path was a sharp climb back on to the road level. Many runners chose to walk this incline; there was no shame in adopting that approach.
The route then heads south out of the town, and towards a nature reserve type area. This is where the route changed from last year. Presumably due to a late problem last year, the distance measured long (by about ¼ mile) but this year, we took a different route through this area which from memory, was also a little less undulating than previously. After a mile or so of running on paths within the reserve, it was back onto the road and a gradual downhill slope towards the finish line.
It was good to see a crowd of well-wishers and as a 5k race takes place at the same time, lots of people were there to cheer the 10k finishers through the line.
We queued up after the finish for an event technical T-shirt, a bottle of water, a medal and a snack bar – really good value for the entry cost.
